Unit 2

Basketball Tactics and Positions
First let’s go through the positions so you know what all the players do.

1. Point Guard - the point guard has the responsibility of being the teams main and primary ball handler brings the ball up the court and knows and sees when other are open, usually known for killer assists, good ball handling skills and can take it to the basket.

2. Shooting Guard - the shooting guard is the teams go to guy on the court can sometimes bring the ball up the court and has a excellent shot

3. Small Forward - The small forward is a hybrid. The small forward can either play wing or post. He is big enough to rebound and post up yet agile enough to play a guard ball handle and shoot.

4. Power Forward - The power forward is your go to guy down low. He plays in the paint and is known for great post moves and rebounding.

5. The center is typically the tallest guy on the court. He is the one who should have the best post moves of all on the court considering no big man has a good shot past 10 feet.

1-3-1 entails that there is one player out front defending the 3 point line usually your quickest. 3 players usually your shooting guard, power forward and small forward in that order guarding from the free throw line down and 1 player usually your center guarding the hoop.

1-2-2 entails that one player out front guarding 3 point line, 2 players guarding free throw line down and finally 2 players guarding the area around the hoop

2-1-2 entails 2 players out front guarding the 3 point line, 1 player guarding from the free throw down area and 2 players guarding the area around the basket.

1-1-3 is a zone not very common but I’m sure you get the idea after reading the past 3 types of zone.

2-3 zone is different because it only has 2 lines of defence. 2 players out front and 3 guarding the area around the basket.
